Said to be a favorite of samurai warlord Date Masamune

  • Shishi odori, or "deer dance," is a traditional folk dance originating in the Sendai Domain (present day Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures), a history that dates back over 400 years. Said to be a favorite of Date Masamune, legend has it that he requested dance troupes to perform this dance at Aoba Castle every year. Due to its historical significance, shishi odori has been designated as a Folk Cultural Property in Miyagi Prefecture. Every year, dance teams from across Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures gather in Kurihara City to perform and celebrate this unique dance to keep the tradition alive.
