The Hanayama Matchlock Rifle Festival takes place every year on May 5 from 1 p.m. in Kurihara City.

Originally started in 1712, this festival began when the regional feudal lord had his riflemen hold a memorial by firing of their guns in the direction of a shrine’s inner sanctuary statue in the hope of giving peace and tranquility to his deceased wife.

Today, the tradition continues with adults and children forming matchlock rifle teams and holding shooting displays with traditional rifles. In addition to the rifle team shows, a parade of mikoshi (traditional portable shrines), a local orchestra and dance performance, and karaoke festival will take place.
