The Hanayama Matchlock Rifle Festival takes place every year on May 5 in Kurihara City.
The festival originated in 1712, when the wife of a regional feudal lord prayed at a shrine for the recovery and health of her ailing child. When her prayers were answered, she expressed her deep gratitude by having the clan's rifle corps fire ceremonial rounds in celebration.
Today, that tradition lives on, with both adults and children forming matchlock rifle teams to take part in a parade featuring mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines), as they stroll through the town. After the parade, shooting displays using traditional firearms are performed. Don’t miss this rare spectacle showcasing Japan’s historical firearms culture!2025 Schedule
