The “City of Sushi” is how people think of the port city of Shiogama. Located less than thirty minutes from Sendai by train, this small city of 50,000 people is home to more than twenty sushi restaurants, all known for their quality product. One of the oldest and best-known shops is Sushi Shirahata, founded thirty-five years ago. It serves delicious nigiri and maki (rolled) sushi, donburi (rice bowls) and miso soups to sushi lovers who come to Shiogama looking for a high-class sushi experience.
The restaurant is in a free-standing building a short walk from Hon-Shiogama Station. It spans two floors and offers counter seating, a Japanese-style room, and a party table. The menu relies on the super-fresh, delicious fish that arrives daily at Shiogama Port , so it changes based on the day's catch. The main sushi type is nigiri (fish placed over rice) which is carefully cut and arranged by the master chefs. It is offered in a variety of combination plates set at price points based on grade and cut of fish. Alongside the nigiri, there are also three kinds of chirashi sushi (seafood over sushi rice), and two delicious miso soups: fish and crab. If you want to enjoy just some good Shiogama sake with small appetizers, a wide variety of sashimi (sliced raw fish) is also available.
The sushi here is remarkable. I tried the omakase nigiri set, in which the chef chooses the arrangement, and was completely satisfied by both the quality and the quantity. I also suggest having a negitoro temaki (hand roll stuffed with minced fatty tuna and onion), a real delicacy. The sushi chef minced the fatty tuna and the green onion right in front of me and the result was outstanding.
