The best way to appreciate the incredible natural scenery of Matsushima Bay is from the water! As well as boasting a plethora of culturally and historically important buildings, temples and shrines, Matsushima has long been celebrated as one of the Nihon Sankei (Three Views of Japan), with more than two hundred pine-covered islands dotting its picturesque bay.
Relaxing bay cruises run along several routes. The two standard cruises are a loop route departing and returning to Matsushima, and a one-way route ferrying sightseers to and from the neighboring port town of Shiogama. Other routes take passengers further out into the lesser-known corners of Oku-Matsushima to see the Sagakei Gorge. Standard cruises depart hourly and take approximately fifty minutes. Tickets can be purchased just prior to departure.
In winter, special oyster nabe cruises are also offered along the same routes as the standard cruises. Reservations are required for the oyster nabe cruise.
