Situated in Toraya Yokocho, Fuki Sushi is in its seventh decade of providing the sort of incredible sushi and local hospitality you can find only in small, family-owned restaurants. Daisuke Fukase, the third-generation owner of the restaurant, will welcome and take care of you. Hyonosuke Oikawa, a sushi chef since 1967 who has worked at Fuki Sushi since 1983, is there to demonstrate what real Japanese sushi tastes like, making you think that what you have eaten until now was just a pale imitation.
Fuki Sushi is indeed a high-class sushi restaurant, completely different from the sushi-go-round or all-you-can-eat spots we often find abroad (and even in Japan). The sushi here is crafted by professionals with decades of experience using the best products from the sea near Miyagi. During lunch hours it is possible to enjoy rice bowls topped with fresh seafood, such as chirashi-don, Miyagi salmon-don, bonito-don or the local specialty Sendaidzuke-don, seafood marinated in delicious Sendai miso. There is also a lunch set that features classic nigiri or maki sushi. For dinner, diners can choose between five different sushi set combinations, or an à la carte custom sushi experience! A nice variety of shochu, liquors, and local sake are also available to accompany your meal.
What I like about Fuki Sushi, besides the mouthwatering sushi itself, is the atmosphere. Sitting at the counter, receiving suggestions about what to eat based on the season, and learning about sushi while interacting with the owner and the chef add a new dimension to the sushi experience. It helps to be able to speak Japanese, but regardless, Fukase-san, Oikawa-san, and the rest of the staff will do their best to welcome you.
