WINTER

  • Although the climate is harsh, winter is a fascinating season with an entirely different landscape from the rest of Japan. Seafood is in its prime, a variety of winter sports are available, and winter rituals are still part of life, even in cities.

DONTOSAI

This still very much active ritual features thousands of scarcely-dressed people marching towards a sacred fire burning at Sendai's Osaki Hachiman shrine right in the middle of winter.
