Deer Dance or Shishi Odori is a traditional folk dance originating in Sendai Domain (present day Miyagi and Iwate Prefecture) with a history that goes back over 400 years.
Said to be a favorite of Date Masamune, legend has it that he requested dance teams to perform this dance at Aoba Castle every year. Due to its historical significance, the Deer Dance has been designated as a Folk Cultural Property in Miyagi Prefecture.
Every year, dance teams from across Miyagi and Iwate Prefecture gather in Kurihara City to perform and celebrate this unique dance to keep the tradition alive.
