Shiogama is famous for its local seafood and has the highest number of sushi restaurants per-capita in all of Japan. In a city full of sushi, this unassuming sushi restaurant remains among the most popular with locals.
When you arrive at the entrance, the first thing that you will see is a shy octopus swimming in a tank. Shiogama-ko is often lively, filled with the voices of families enjoying an evening out. Choose a seat at the counter to watch the sushi chefs delicately craft each piece of sushi to order.
The fish is purchased fresh every morning from the Shiogama Seafood Wholesale Market. The sushi is crafted from seasonal catch and the pieces are large. Various cuts of tuna and salmon are the go-to staples, but even the tamago (egg) is a cut above most restaurants'. Shiogama-ko often features unusual specials, such as kurage (jellyfish).
There is an English menu and an English form available for ordering sushi. The restaurant also offers comfortable booths perfect for small groups.
Shiogama-ko Sushi is the best sushi in the world and the prices are very reasonable. I quickly became a regular because the staff is very friendly and the sushi chef likes to crack jokes. Salmon toro is my favourite, but I suggest trying other items too, like scallop, sea urchin, and kurage. Another favourite of mine is the seafood miso soup, a must try if you’re in the region.
