In 2011, the Onagawa train station was destroyed by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Four years later, in 2015, the new Onagawa Station was unveiled. The new station building is a minor architectural masterpiece, designed by world-famous architect Ban Shigeru. It houses a waiting room, local products shop, observation deck overlooking the bay, and hot springs facility Yupo’po. The roof of the building is designed to resemble the wings of a soaring bird, a gesture intended to wish the town a bright future.
