  • In 2011, the Onagawa train station was destroyed by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Four years later, in 2015, the new Onagawa Station was unveiled. The new station building is a minor architectural masterpiece, designed by world-famous architect Ban Shigeru. It houses a waiting room, local products shop, observation deck overlooking the bay, and hot springs facility Yupoppo. The roof of the building is designed to resemble the wings of a soaring bird, a gesture meant to wish Onagawa Town a bright future.
