Yonekawa Mizukaburi Festival

Watch scarecrow-like men throw buckets of water on people and houses

Designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event, Yonekawa Mizukaburi is a traditional event in northern Miyagi where local men become divine messengers to protect the town from fire.

Yonekawa Mizukaburi originally began over 800 years ago and is held every year on the first weekend of February. During the festival, local residents dress up in straw costumes, cover their faces in soot, and pray at a temple before walking through town and throwing buckets of water onto houses and eager crowds of residents and tourists.

The event takes places from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
