• Originating during the Edo period, the Aoba Festival is now a popular celebration of Sendai known in particular for the signature Suzume Odori (sparrow dance) performed in the streets, a dance named after the vibrant garments and bird-like movements of the dancers. Festival-goers can experience games and activities from the Edo period, eat delicious local specialties, and watch parades of floats and Suzume Odori performances at various locations around downtown Sendai.

On Saturday, Sparrow Dances take place across the city. Local food will also be available. In the evening, a lantern festival float will parade through the streets. On Sunday, a parade of over two thousand dancers will perform Suzume Odori along the streets of central Sendai, accompanied by splendid parade floats and mikoshi (portable shrines).
