OKAMA-JINJA SHRINE

Mysterious salt cauldrons predict disasters

御釜神社 / Okama-jinja Shrine

Area : Matsushima Bay

This unassuming shrine is named for its four metal caldrons used since ancient times to make salt. People believe the color of the water in the caldrons changes before disasters, including before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Because of this, this is designated as one of the Three Great Miracles of Japan.

There is an annual salt-making ceremony which takes place on the 6th of July. Sacred water is saved from this ceremony, which has continued for 1,000 years.
