VISIT A CRATER

  • Covered in snow for half the year, Mt. Zao thaws to reveal its emerald crater lake. In spring vehicles pass through towering snow walls. In summer, hikers of all abilities can explore the rocky ridge. A brief autumn brings an impressive show of green, gold and red leaves which impress from a distance and from the top of the mountains.

JOIN A FESTIVAL

  • In this rural region dependent on the land and sea, people danced, prayed and gave thanks for a good harvest. The spirit of these festivals lives on today with highlights in each season.

FIND PEACE IN AN EARTHLY PARADISE

  • For 1000 years, pilgrims made long journeys on foot to Matsushima. When they finally glimpsed the misty islands of Matsushima Bay they thought they had arrived in paradise. See the sunrise from an outdoor onsen bath, watch the moonlight on the ripping waves and take your time exploring the closets islands for the true Matsushima experience.

CELEBRATE THE SEASONS

  • Get outside to feel Miyagi’s ever-changing nature. Spring is the season for picnicking under the cherry blossoms along rivers and in parks. Cool off in summer with the sea breeze on an island or seaside town. In autumn, hike through the forest to see the changing color of the leaves and see them lit up at night in Japanese gardens. In winter, head to the lakes of northern Miyagi where thousands of migratory birds stopover on their way from Siberia.

DISTURB THE SNOW MONSTERS

  • Do you dare disturb these slumbering giants? Only a few places in the world have winds steady and strong enough to wrap pine trees in thick cocoons of snow and ice. Make your way to the Zao mountains to get close to these frozen giants.

GET CLOSE TO ANIMALS

  • Just off the coast of Miyagi is an island where cats outnumber people. A nearby island is known for its wild deer. Stop by Fox Village in the forest of Mt. Zao for a rare chance to watch, feed and even pet wild foxes.

WORLD-CLASS SEAFOOD

  • Just off the coast of Miyagi, warm and cool currents meet and create one of the world’s richest fishing grounds. Enjoy oysters grilled in the shell, seasonal fish in a miso glaze, or beautifully presented sushi straight from the fish market.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

  • Get outside and get active. From surfing to skiing, hiking to cycling, and kayaking fishing to cycling there is an outdoor adventure waiting for you year-round in Miyagi.
